Workshop I--Communicating Healthcare Data with Tables and Graphs
Data is coming at your organization at the speed of light and you need to communicate it to all of your stakeholders--patients, clinicians, administrators, regulators, payers, etc. correctly, clearly and compellingly. Unfortunately they just don't teach you this stuff in school and it is not intuitive. The skills required to effectively communicate your data visually using tables and graphs must be learned and developed.
And this lack of training is evident. Often times the tables and graphs used to communicate healthcare data are not well designed, sometimes to the point of incorrectly communicating the information that is used to measure performance, educate and inform patients and identify the right opportunities for change and improvement to our healthcare systems. And in healthcare, perhaps more than any other industry, you just can't afford to communicate this data incorrectly.
This full-day course delivers hands-on training in the correct use of tables and graphs and incorporates examples of actual healthcare data. A combination of lecture and small group case study activities this interactive course is designed to give you the tools you need to present your healthcare data so that your message is both accurate and effective.
This course will provide you with the framework you need to develop these skills. Here's what we will cover and what you will learn:
· Historical figures contributions to the visual communication of healthcare data and information.
· The difference between quantitative and categorical data.
· The definition of tables and the arrangement and encoding of data in tables.
· When to use tables to communicate data.
· The characteristics of data that may be displayed graphically.
· When to use graphs to communicate data.
· The seven most commonly used graphs to communicate data.
· The best practices of table and graph design.
All participants will also receive a copy of the book Show Me the Numbers-Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten a comprehensive guide to table and graph design.
This activity has been approved by Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses, Inc., to award six (6) contact hours.Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses, Inc. is accredited as an approver of continuing nurse education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's COA.

Workshop II-Dashboard Design for Communicating Healthcare Data
Properly designed, data dashboards have enormous potential to help healthcare professionals visually identify and monitor at a glance the most important information needed to think, reason and make informed healthcare decisions. Yet this potential has not been realized. This is because the skills that are required simply are not taught, nor are they intuitive.
Currently, dashboards used to communicate healthcare data are more typically poorly designed, at best failing to and at worst even incorrectly communicating the critical information used to measure performance, communicate information to patients and identify the right opportunities for change and improvement to our healthcare systems. And in healthcare, perhaps more than any other industry, we just can't afford poor data communication.
This full-day course delivers that hard-to-find hands-on training in the best and most effective design practices. It's also interactive, with a combination of lecture and small group case study activities, and designed to give you the tools you need to accurately and effectively present your healthcare data via a dashboard.
Here's what you will learn:
· A brief history and definition of data dashboards.
· The current state of dashboards-problems revealed and opportunities identified.
· The 13 most common dashboard design mistakes.
· How to use human visual perceptions to design effective dashboards.
· The guiding principles of dashboard design.
· The features of a well-designed dashboard.
· How to determine the best medium to display your healthcare data.
· How to organize your dashboard to impart information at a glance
· How to make your dashboard aesthetically pleasing.
· How to test your design for usability.
